Fandom: Thor (2011 movie)
Name: Sif
Canon Point: End of the movie.

History: Sif is a longtime acquaintance of the royal family of Asgard and has been a friend and companion of its two princes since childhood. Very little of Sif’s actual pre-film history is discussed in the film, but it’s fairly clear that it shares only a few common elements with the comics and fewer with the original mythology.

At a young age, Sif began training to be a warrior, presumably against the wishes of her family. She was blonde as a child but Loki cut her hair as a prank and, after Thor threatened him, got a golden hair-piece from dwarf craftsmen. It took root and began to grow as her own hair, but because Loki hadn't paid the dwarves, the hair turned black and has been that color ever since.

Personality:
A warrior through and through, Sif embodies many of the aspects that one might associate with that title: she is courageous, stalwart, fierce, keen in mind and body. Often called the ‘goddess of war,’ she will fight her enemy tooth and claw, but she understands that there’s more to battle than simply rushing in with your weapons raised and hoping that things sort themselves out. Strategy and tactics are just as important on the field of battle as the blade or shield. Unlike her friend and liege, Thor, Sif tends to stop and consider the consequences of her actions before doing something rash, though that isn’t to say she doesn’t behave impulsively from time to time.

As a fighter, Sif isn’t afraid of getting her hands dirty. She’s not likely to turn down a challenge unless it seriously goes against her better judgement, and sometimes even then. While she isn’t as hotheaded or as easily provoked as some of her friends, her ire can be difficult to quench once it’s stoked. As a protector of the realm of Asgard, she would never use her strength against an innocent who is weaker than herself, but that doesn’t mean she’d object to occasionally using violence or physical intimidation as a means of ending disputes.

Sif is a born combatant, but she wasn’t always a trained one, and her current skill is a testament to her determination and stubbornness. Her desire to become a warrior has never been about craving recognition, but rather for the thrill of battle and the honor of serving her kingdom. Therefore, she doesn’t really care about what people think or say of her. She was unwilling to listen to any naysayers who doubted her ability, and over the years she developed enough martial ability that she is easily able to hold her own against even the strongest adversary.

In keeping with the code of many a valiant warrior, Sif adheres to the ideal of death before dishonor. An honorable death in combat - a warrior’s death for a worthy cause - is preferable to cowardice or weakness. This is not to be mistaken for eagerness to die; Sif has no desire to slough off her immortal coil just yet, but she knows there are things worth dying for, and if she’s going to go, she’d rather do so with her sword in hand than not.

Generally speaking, Sif is a bluntly honest lady, even if the truth is painful. She’s also usually willing to speak her mind on most any matter, but as with battle tactics, sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. Sometimes a well-placed lie or half-truth is a wiser course than full disclosure, but honesty is easier for someone who doesn’t enjoy keeping track of lies once they’re told. Sif wears her feelings plainly on her face, except for this: when in pain, whether physical or emotional, Sif tends to be more stoic than demonstrative. She hates feeling vulnerable and knows that showing weakness can be a deadly mistake.

At the end of the day when the armor comes off, Sif is still a woman of deep feeling underneath the hardened combatant. She’s very open with her friends and enjoys recalling past exploits and adventures, and sharing in good-natured teasing.

Skills | Powers:
Sif is one of the powerful race of Asgard, the Æsir, and is therefore immortal and far stronger than any human. The comics go into some detail as to the extent of her powers (which are only hinted at in the movie), stating that she possesses superhuman strength, speed, stamina, durability, and healing ability, as well as bodily tissue that is approximately three times denser than a human’s.

Aside from her innate powers, Sif is one of the most distinguished warriors in all of Asgard. She has been trained in unarmed, hand-to-hand combat, in the use of several weapons - swords, pole-arms, and knives - and more defensive training with a shield.
